AkronandSummit County

From the Akron Zoo to Pro Football Hame of Fame to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Greater Akron area is chock full of world-class attractions.

A

tthe turn of the century, Ohio's fifth-largest city was known almost exclusively for the tire and rubber industry that dominated the urban landscape. Akron is still the world headquarters for the 116-year-old Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., the world's third-largest tire manufacturer. In recent years, Greater Akron has been recognized as a center of science, education, technology, and invention. Partnerships between civic interests, private foundations, thriving businesses, and the University of Akron have transformed the city into an invigorated, modern city center and the seat of Summit County.

Within a short drive, visitors can encounter flora, fauna, football, and fashion. The

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is the former home of the Seiberling family, whose patriarch F.A. Seiberling was a co-founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. This beautifully restored mansion and garden estate is open to the public for tours and special events. The Akron Zoo boasts an impressive collection of exhibits including Grizzly Ridge, featuring bears, coyote, bald eagle, and wolves. Sports fans might consider a stop at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in nearby North Canton to pay homage to gridiron greats and childhood heroes. The Kent State University Museum contains important collections

of fashion and decorative arts, including period costumes, high fashion, jewelry, and glass.

Arts and culture

Akron's thriving arts community is housed in restored venues and interesting spaces. Music aficionados have many options including the Akron Civic Theatre, a restored 1929 landmark, the EJ Thomas Performing Arts Center, and outdoor venue Lock 3, which features the Indigo Girls in concert during the Games. Lovers of the visual arts have the Akron Museum of Art, Summit Art Space, and a host of independent shops owned by local artists.

Neighborhoods and sports

Nearby Highland Square is a hip, walkable district with a growing nightlife catering to an influx of residents seeking an urban lifestyle just outside the city center. The area, often populated with students from the nearby University of Akron, is anchored by the historic Highland Theatre, built in the late 1930s. The neighborhood is known for its independently owned coffee shops, bars, and businesses. Because no livable city is complete without a hometown ball club, Akron has been the home of the Cleveland Indians AAA baseball team since 1997. Now known as

the Akron Rubber Ducks, the team plays

at Canal Park, a modern, aesthetically beautiful stadium nestled in the heart of downtown Akron.

Parks and trains

Elsewhere in Summit County is the southern border of one of United States' newest and most visited national parks. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers 125 miles of hiking trails, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath, a popular cycling route (and 10K route during Games Week), the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and beautiful scenery along the banks of the Cuyahoga (Indian for "crooked river").
